If you're considering a side extension that will project further than the existing side wall of your home's original structure, you'll need to be aware of some specific rules:
You cannot build it to a height greater than four metres.
It must only consist of a single storey.
The maximum width permitted is half the width of your original dwelling.
It's vital to understand that if your property is located within what's known as 'Article 2(3) designated land' – these are special conservation areas like National Parks or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty – then every single side extension will require you to secure 'householder planning permission'. This means you'll have to submit a formal application to your local council before proceeding.
